Yipes' Optical Networks Power Apex Radiology

February 5, 2002 — (WEB HOST INDUSTRY REVIEW) — Yipes Communications, Inc. (yipes.com), a provider of
r

scalable Ethernet services, announced yesterday that its gigabit optical
r

networks enable Apex Radiology (apexrad.com),
r

a major private provider of outsourced tele-radiology services, to download more
r

than 150,000 high-resolution medical images each month over the Internet.
r

r

Apex Radiology, based in Coral Springs, FL, has teams of licensed
r

radiologists on staff around the clock to immediately interpret images
r

transmitted by medical providers and hospitals in nearly 30 states. Its
r

services can save lives by giving doctors in rural and suburban offices
r

remote access to radiology experts at any time of the day or night. Apex
r

also helps major institutions in urban areas handle overflow work without
r

sacrificing quality.
r

r

Apex Radiology needs plenty of bandwidth, since incoming images run as large
r

as 200 Megabytes. When it went shopping for a new service provider, it says
r

its key criteria were reliability, footprint and value. Apex chose Yipes
r

over a dozen other major carriers, buying 12 Megabits per second of
r

bandwidth to the Internet.
r

r

“Yipes was the most cost-effective, robust network out there,” said Wade
r

Rome, president of Apex Radiology. “I liked its IP orientation, reliable
r

fiber-optic architecture and excellent coverage area for metro and national
r

connectivity. We felt its optical Ethernet service was far superior to
r

traditional copper-based alternatives.”
r

r

Yipes gives customers the ability to change bandwidth instantly to meet
r

emergency needs, or simply to accommodate general business growth without
r

new truck rolls, equipment purchases or new line installations. Through a
r

secure Web site, users can instantly select their bandwidth from 1 Mbps to
r

1000 Mbps, in 1 Mbps increments.
r

r

In the past, the constraints of fixed telco networks forced Apex to turn
r

down business, knowing that it couldn’t add bandwidth in time to meet
r

customer needs. “Yipes allows us to make business decisions based on the
r

client’s merits without having to factor in the network,” Rome said. “We
r

could easily double our business over the next 12 to 18 months,” he added.
r

r

Rome also said Yipes has proven to be reliable, with no downtime since Apex
r

was connected in August. “One time we disconnected our network from Yipes’
r

port to move some equipment, and immediately we got a call from Yipes’
r

customer care center asking if we had a problem,” Rome recalled.
r

r

Yipes’ services, available in 21 markets coast-to-coast, include Yipes MAN
r

(Metro Area Networking), Yipes NAN (National Area Networking) and Yipes NET
r

(high-speed Internet access).
