Yahoo Plans Western NY Data Center

(WEB HOST INDUSTRY REVIEW) — Search engine giant Yahoo (www.yahoo.com) has tentively selected Lockport, New York in Niagara County to build a $150 million data center.

Though it has not yet been finalized, Yahoo has applied for site plan approval and a property tax break for the project.

The data center, which was first revealed last month, is expected to employ 125 workers.

Yahoo said last month that it was considering three Western New York locations to build the data center, which could be as large as 60,000 square feet.

The company says it has not made a final decision regarding the project, adding that it is still in talks with other states and counties, including Genesee County in Western New York.

The New York Power Authority authorized 15 megawatts of low-cost power in an effort to entice the company to build the data center in Western New York.

The Lockport Planning Board will discuss the possible Yahoo build at a meeting Wednesday and has also planned a public hearing on the site plan for June 30.

The Town Industrial Development Agency will hold its own hearing June 30 or July 1 to discuss possible tax breaks for the project.
