Yahoo May Build Western NY Data Center

(WEB HOST INDUSTRY REVIEW) — Search engine giant Yahoo (www.yahoo.com) may build a data center as large as 60,000 square feet in Western New York, creating 50 to 100 jobs to jumpstart a declining local economy.

The company has been in talks with New York state officials including US Senator Charles Schumer about the possible build.

In a May 10 press conference, Schumer said that the proposed Yahoo data center was “not a done deal”.

However, he did stress that the chances of the construction going through were “very, very good,” according to reports.

Meanwhile, Govenor David Paterson requested the New York Power Authority to devise a low-cost hydropower plan to entice the company to build the data center in the Buffalo area.

So far, no timeline for the possible data center build has been announced.

Yahoo has been expanding its data center footprint as of late.

The company recently announced plans to build a $100 million, 150,000-square-foot data center in Nebraska, which will employ about 50 people.
