December 13, 2004 — (WEB HOST INDUSTRY REVIEW) — Internet portal, domain registrar and Web hosting provider Yahoo! (yahoo.com) has cut its domain name pricing to $4.98 per year in a promotional offering that will run until the end of the year, reports say.

The aggressive pricing comes four months after Yahoo! dropped the price for domain names to $9.95, a move analysts say was designed to help expand its share of the shared Web hosting market.

In recent months, domain name pricing has continued to drop across the industry as hosts use domains as a loss leader to attract hosting customers. 1&1 Internet, EV1Servers, AIT and Hostway are all offering domains for $6.95 or less per year. Just last month, Interland dropped its domain name pricing to $7.95 per month, a move that the company says helped generate significant customer gains.

According to research and analysis firm Netcraft, seven out of top 20 Web hosts are now offering domains for less than $9.95.
