October 6, 2004 — (WEB HOST INDUSTRY REVIEW) — Bank of Scotland’s Worldpay (worldpay.com) is the latest payment processor to have its operations disrupted as the result of a distributed denial of service attack, according to a report by research and analysis firm Netcraft (netcraft.com).

Worldpay confirmed the incident, saying it was “adversely affected” by a DDoS that began this past weekend.

According to Netcraft, Worldpay showed signs of improvement on Tuesday with only a short period of failures. Worldpay says that some transactions are being processed, however many Worldpay customers have reported significantly lower than normal sales since the attack started.

The attack on Worldpay comes on the heels of similar DDoS attacks perpetrated recently against payment processing companies such as Authorize.net. Many of the attacks are preceded by extortion and blackmail attempts. Smaller payment processing companies, typically considered more vulnerable, have increasingly been targeted by cyber-crime over the last year.
