WorldCom Web Addresses Retired
May 4, 2006 — (WEB HOST INDUSTRY REVIEW) — According to reports released Thursday by Internet research firm Netcraft (netcraft.com) the Web addresses for WorldCom, worldcom.com and worldcom.net, have been taken offline, removing from the Web the last remaining ties to the notorious brand.
After the company filed for the largest bankruptcy in U.S. history, the WorldCom brand became emblematic of white-collar crime. The domains are still owned by MCI, the company that emerged from WorldComÂ’s reorganization, and was acquired this year by Verizon.
When companies are acquired or renamed, domains are typically redirected to the new sites to capture traffic looking for the old URL. According to Netcraft, the worldcom.com and worldcom.net domains have no A record in their DNS settings, which suggests the names have been taken offline intentionally.
WorldCom filed for Chapter 11 bankruptcy in July 2003 with more than $103 billion in assets. The company admitted to inflating profits in its earnings reports by as much as $11 million. Former CEO Bernard Ebbers was convicted of securities fraud and conspiracy charges last year, and sentenced to 25 years in prison.
