WordPress hosting provider WP Engine has opened an office in downtown San Antonio, TX, at Geekdom, a co-working space for technology entrepreneurs.

According to a report by the San Antonio Journal on Tuesday, WP Engine is currently scouting “new pools of talent in the area.”

“San Antonio is one of the best cities in the nation for hosting,” Heather Brunner, CEO of WP Engine said. “There is a great local labor pool full of high service-oriented people with incredible tech backgrounds.”

The new office space comes as WP Engine has announced a new team within its company focused on giving back to the WordPress community and innovation.

The mission of the team, called Alpha Labs, is to contribute back to open-source projects, mostly WordPress but also projects like nginx and HipHop. The other objective of the team is to invent “cutting-edge, brand-new technologies that are too new for heavy production use, but allows us to move fast and invite our customers to participate even before it’s ready for prime-time,” WP Engine said.

The first project out of the labs team is S3 Mirror, which enables mirroring of WP Engine-hosted websites to AWS’ storage service, S3.

“Our new Labs will ensure that WP Engine is constantly innovating and expanding our core competencies, as well as continuing to increase our presence in the Open Source community,” Tomás Puig, Senior Director, Labs, WP Engine said. “S3 Mirror is the fastest and most scalable mirroring service the hosting industry has seen and it is a sign of what more is to come from WP Engine Labs. We’re excited about developing new technologies to take our company to the next level.”

WP Engine is headquartered in Austin, TX, and has offices in San Francisco, CA.

Earlier this year, the hosting company secured $15 million in growth funding from North Bridge Growth Equity to expand its workforce and add a European office in 2015.

WP Engine currently has more than 14,000 customers who host more than 120,000 websites.

Recently, OpenStack cloud provider Metacloud opened a new office in Austin with plans to double its workforce this year.

WP Engine is hosting a meet-and-greet at Blue Box in the Pearl Brewery Tues., June 24 between 5 – 7 pm for individuals wanting to learn more about career opportunities.
