SpamExperts CTO Dreas van Donselaar
(WEB HOST INDUSTRY REVIEW) –- SpamExperts (www.spamexperts.com) CTO Dreas van Donselaar delivered the first session of the afternoon, which featured the comical title “Why nerds tend to receive the most spam and how to fix that”.
He started the presentation by showing photos of convicted spammers and their wealthy houses and incomes.
SpamExperts, as Donselaar explained, focuses on the ISP and hosting industry.
Donselaar joked that nerds receive more spam than other individuals because they order more Viagra, they’re less confident about their size, and they like fancy watches.
But he soon corrected these comical stereotypes, explaining that some reasons include the fact that nerds prefer open source versus closed-source, they don’t like black boxes, take on a do-it-yourself approach, and tend to have prioritization difficulties.
Donselaar shifted the focus of his presentation roughly around the halfway mark of the presentation, providing pointers on how companies can become successful.
He explained that sysadmins are gradually turning into appliaction managers as they have no more hardware to play around with, need to work with people, and have to cooperate with suppliers.
He said that companies must determine where their company is going by looking at the short term versus long term.
They should ask themselves key questions, such as where is my competition heading, what are my strengths and weaknesses, and what can I get externally.
The constantly evolving hosting industry requires cooperation between managers and the tech department, as well as maintaining a competitive edge through value added services like anti-spam and SSL certificates, says Donselaar.
