(WEB HOST INDUSTRY REVIEW) — UK web hosting provider Webfusion (www.webfusion.co.uk) announced on Monday it has collaborated with IBM to open a new £2.5 million data center in Leeds, UK for its customers.
The 1,083 square foot facility has 130 server racks and uses the latest technology, including cooling systems, high-level security and fire detection/suppression systems, to ensure green, secure and reliable data storage and hosting for businesses.
The data center also features effective power back-up capabilities so that in the event of a power outage customer data remains online and available.
“We have invested a great deal to maintain the highest levels of customer service, ensure that the data center is both best of breed and based in the UK,” says Thomas Vollrath, managing director at Webfusion. “We don’t believe that businesses should have to settle for data centers overseas and, from a customer’s point of view, it’s reassuring to know that your data and support staff are onsite here in the UK 24/7/365.”
Webfusion worked alongside IBM to develop a data center that would “ensure the highest degree of security and performance whilst adhering to stringent data storage regulations and industry standards,” says Vollrath.
The new facility maintains peak server performance for its customers through targeted cooling via air vents to racks arranged in hot aisle/cold aisle configuration.
Additionally, the data center’s efficient refrigeration technology allows it to achieve an Energy Efficiency Ratio increase of 30 percent.
Data is kept safe as the facility has a redundant power unit that provides an effective failover capability.
In the event of a power outage, the battery-powered back-up initiates for up to 15 minutes before the on-site diesel generator powers up to run the entire system.
Finally, the data center is equipped with a range of security features, including card-activated doors, installed CCTV cameras that monitor the office around the clock, and fire and smoke detection and suppression.
Webfusion is one of the largest web hosting providers in the UK, with 1.9 million hosted websites and almost 2 million registered domains under its belt.
In December, the company launched its North American operations, offering a promotional $0.99 domain name to attract North American customers.
