March 3, 2005 -- (WEB HOST INDUSTRY REVIEW) -- Educational IT solution provider WebBased Ltd. (webbased.co.uk) announced on Tuesday it is using its Internet based GIS application InfoMapper and ER Mapper's Image Web Server to serve the world's largest image - a 3.9 terabyte ECW file.

The image of the South West of England is delivered via the Internet to schools in England's South West Grid for Learning. The InfoMapper application enables users to draw over any area of the image and attach or link to information and digital resources in that area.

Britain aerial photography data supplier UKP was commissioned to create the 3.9 terabyte (3,900 gigabytes) ECW image, which is comprised of over 24,000 individual 1km tiles of aerial photography. The tiles had a mixture of 10cm and 25cm resolutions. The ER Mapper application was used to mix the entire dataset into one seamless ECW image.

"Using traditional file management techniques and server technology is just not a viable solution when you are dealing with imagery of this proportion," says WebBased CTO Adrian Beaven-Smith. "ER Mapper's ECW and Image Web Server technology allows us to dramatically reduce our IT infrastructure requirements whilst providing a superior client experience in terms of image delivery speed, even over slow networks."
