June 16, 2004 — (WEB HOST INDUSTRY REVIEW) — According to research and analysis firm Netcraft (netcraft.com), the number of Web servers found by its Web Server Survey has increased by 12 percent in the last six months.

Netcraft said 42 percent of that increase took place in the Americas while Europe, the Middle East and Africa accounted for 34 percent. According to Netcraft, the regions of Europe, the Middle East and Africa now account for 33 percent of total Web servers, a five percent increase over March of 2001.

The company also published data showing that since March 2001, the number of IP addresses on the Internet has increased by 11 percent. This number is in contrast to the 106 percent increase in the number of Web server computers over the same time frame. Since 1999, according to Netcraft, IP addresses have increased by 103 percent while Web servers have grown by 355 percent.

According to Netcraft, the growing number of Web server computers, identified through reverse DNS lookups, could be attributed to the growth of the Internet and virtual hosting.
