(WEB HOST INDUSTRY REVIEW) — Web hosting management software developer CloudLinux (www.cloudlinux.com) announced on Tuesday it has released CloudLinux OS version 6.1. Based on kernel version 2.6.32, CloudLinux says its flagship product’s latest version improves security, stability and compatibility.
This announcement comes a month after web hosting provider CoolHandle Hosting deployed CloudLinux to improve server performance.
CloudLinux is a server operating system that provides improved performance on shared hosting servers through its Lightweight Virtual Environment technology, according to the press release. The technology allows administrators to limit CPU, memory and concurrent connections available to each tenant, CloudLinux says.
CloudLinux says its operating system is the only commercially-supported Linux OS made specifically for shared hosting.
CloudLinux OS 6.1 is compatible with Red Hat Enterprise Linux and CentOS, as well as control panels including cPanel, Plesk, DirectAdmin and more.
According to the press release, web hosts can convert to CloudLinux in less than 10 minutes. For a limited time, CloudLinux is offering free conversion and installation support through October 15, 2011.
“CloudLinux 6.1 further improves on what has quickly become the premier OS choice for shared hosters,” Igor Seletskiy, CloudLinux CEO said in a statement. “Support for the latest Linux kernel enables hosting providers to offer the best service offerings to their customers by delivering shared hosting products that best meet the needs and budgets of businesses of all sizes.”
Lightweight Virtual Environment technology limits abuse and prevents the “bad neighbor effect” where one tenant can slow down an entire server.
Shared hosts can increase server density and bring greater efficiency to their business with CloudLinux OS, according to the company.
On its website, CloudLinux is offering a 30-day free trial.
CloudLinux also offers MySQL Governor which allows tight control over the MySQL resources available to users, and is set to release CageFS, a virtualized file system for shared hosters, according to the press release.
