Web Host The Planet Crowns E-Queen

November 22, 2005 — (WEB HOST INDUSTRY REVIEW) — Web hosting provider The Planet (theplanet.com) announced on Friday that Melissa Borrego has won its E-Queen Contest, which sought America’s next female Internet business sensation, during a live broadcast on nationally syndicated radio show Kidd Kraddick in the Morning. The Dallas, Texas native was awarded $10,000 in cash and one year of free Web hosting to fund her “cake in a jar” business.

The contest started with a request on the radio show that asked women to submit proposals for their business ideas. Dallas Mavericks owner Mark Cuban selected two finalists out of the five best proposals. The Planet then assisted with activating the e-commerce Web sites for the two businesses, Care Cake and Juke Shoes, including complete merchant accounts and a database management system.

Borrego’s Web site sells fully baked cakes that are shipped in glass jars, packaged in a decorative fabric with optional personalized messages. JukeShoes.com, offered shoes with compartments in the soles for personal items such as keys, identification cards, and money.

The finalists had seven days to manage their online businesses to bring in as many sales as possible, receiving on-air mentions on Kidd Kraddick in the Morning. At the end of the week, CareCake.com generated the highest sales of the two.
