(WEB HOST INDUSTRY REVIEW) – German Web hosting provider STRATO (www.strato.com) announced on Tuesday that it has partnered with Open-Xchange (www.open-xchange.com) to provide its European hosting customers with business class webmail.

According to a press release, as Europe’s second largest hosting provider, STRATO will provide Open-Xchange business webmail to shared hosting customers in Germany, the Netherlands, Spain, UK, France and Italy, to more than 5 million email accounts.

Existing and new customers will have access to Opn-Xchange’s contact and calendar management as part of the package.

The cloud-based central communication application integrates contacts from social networks as well as email from external email accounts, according to the press release.

“We have chosen Open-Xchange as the leading cloud communication platform providing STRATO customers with integrated communication capabilities,” Damian Schmidt, CEO of STRATO said in a statement. “With Open-Xchange, we are enabling our customers to work more productively anywhere they have access to a browser and an Internet connection. STRATO customers will benefit from access to all of their relevant private and business data – like contacts on the various social networks – from one easy-to-use interface.”

STRATO says its customers can upgrade to premium features through an in-application store.

“With more than 24 million users, Open-Xchange is now the world’s leading technology supplier of hosted groupware,” said Rafael Laguna, CEO of Open-Xchange. “Providing consumers and businesses with the next-level cloud-based communication platform, Open-Xchange is the perfect partner for STRATO to differentiate in a highly-competitive hosting market.”

With an email and groupware solution designed for SaaS providers, many hosting providers have deployed Open-Xchange. Open-Xchange recently renewed an agreement with Parallels.
