(WEB HOST INDUSTRY REVIEW) — Web hosting provider Steadfast Networks (http://steadfast.net) announced on Tuesday it has purchased enough carbon offset credits to offer a 100 percent carbon offset for its staff commuting, office usage, core infrastructure, networking equipment, shared web hosting, VPS hosting, and backup services.
Steadfast Networks is certified carbon neutral by Carbonfund (www.carbonfund.org), an organization that helps businesses reduce and offset their climate impact through the purchase of carbon offset credits.
“Moving steadily forward in the 21st century does not mean trampling all over our natural resources, so we have teamed up with Carbonfund.org and implemented a variety of green initiative programs to help preserve our natural resources,” says Karl Zimmerman, CEO of Steadfast Networks. “The same high quality and exceptional service Steadfast Networks stands for in our managed servers, colocation hosting services, and web hosting services is the standard we aspire to for maintaining a healthy environment.”
While purchasing carbon offsets does not lower the actual power consumption of a data center, it certainly encourages alternative energy production elsewhere and forces a web host, such as Steadfast, to be more efficient with its power consumption because it costs more than other companies.
In addition to purchasing carbon offsets, Steadfast Networks says it encourages employees to commute by foot, bike, or public transportation, and in some cases, work from home.
The company also orders more than 90 percent of its equipment with no packing materials from local vendors such as Amadi Systems, cutting down on the emissions caused while transporting and excess trash.
Steadfast also receycles alll paper and cardboard products, equipment, hardware, and servers in its buildings.
Steadfast Network provides a range of services, including shared web hosting, VPS hosting, backup, colocation and dedicated server.
