Cloud, dedicated and managed hosting provider SoftLayer announced on Thursday that it had been named the fastest growing company in the Dallas area by the Caruth Institute for Entrepreneurship, a part of the Southern Methodist University Cox School of Business.

According to SoftLayer, the Dallas 100 Entrepreneur Awards promote businesses driving economic growth and innovation in the area. Winners are chosen based on a variety of criteria that includes revenue growth, percentage growth and absolute dollar growth over the past three years.

For SoftLayer, of course, that three-year period included the company’s acquisition by GI Partners, and its subsequent merger with The Planet, events that greatly increased the company’s size and revenues. Aside from the acquisition and merger, the company has been building quickly over the last year, including expanding into Europe with a new office in Amsterdam.

In October, the company opened a facility in Singapore.

“We’re honored to be named first on a list that incorporates not only technology companies, but enterprises from every area of business,” said Lance Crosby, CEO for SoftLayer, quoted in the press release. “This has been a banner year for SoftLayer, both in terms of customer adoption and revenue growth. We’ve expanded internationally, and we continue to innovate our industry by making technology more accessible and easier to manage while improving the bottom line.”

According to the announcement, SoftLayer is the largest privately-held hosting provider in the world. The company currently manages 100,000 servers for more than 23,000 customers in more than 140 countries.

The Dallas 100 awards were given out at a ceremony held Wednesday, November 16. The full list of winners has not yet been published. As of publishing this article, the winners for 2010 are listed on the “winners” page of the Caruth Institute website.
