(WEB HOST INDUSTRY REVIEW) — Counteracting a negative by-product of shipping highly-sensitive equipment, on-demand data center and hosting services provider SoftLayer Technologies (www.softlayer.com) has been awarded a certificate from Metro Foam Recycling for recycling more than 12,000 pounds (more than six tons) of foam material in 2008.
Due to a partnership between the two companies, according to SoftLayer’s Monday announcement, Metro Foam recycles all of the foam packaging material from SoftLayer’s new server shipments, greatly reducing the amount of waste that would go into a landfill.
“We are proud to have reached this milestone in our efforts to reduce our impact on the environment,” SoftLayer facilities manager Roy Rushe said in a statement. “We believe it’s our responsibility as global corporate citizens to do all we can. We will continue to actively seek partnerships and innovative ways to reduce our environmental footprint.”
According to EPA figures, electronics production and disposal amounts to approximately two percent of municipal solid waste, making recycling a critical step in reducing the environmental impact of data centers.
Beyond the typical environmental initiatives of increasing energy efficiency, SoftLayer participates in a number of practices and programs for optimizing its environmental efficiency. For instance, SoftLayer has collaborated with its exclusive server provider, Supermicro (www.supermicro.com), to create a reduced server packaging material program, minimizing the amount of packaging used for shipping servers to SoftLayer’s data centers nationwide and eliminating the production of unnecessary components and user guides.
