(WEB HOST INDUSTRY REVIEW) — Canadian Web hosting provider SkGold Hosting (www.skgoldhosting.com) announced on Thursday its data center has implemented new green practices and procedures.
The Web host says it is using renewable energy sources, including coal and oil, for both its power and its cooling processes.
The company’s data center also invests in renewable energy credits through carbon offset provider 3Degrees (www.3degreesinc.com).
These credits are used to transfer wind-generated electricity into the system, which the data center then uses to extract power equal to its credit for clean and renewable energy.
In April, Web hosting provider BounceWeb also announced it purchased renewable energy certificates to support the production of 6,000kWh of renewable energy.
“First, SkGold Hosting’s data center is helping to reduce the negative impact on the environment of generating power with non-renewable resources like coal and oil,” says Sergey Krongold, founder of SkGold Hosting. “In addition, energy efficient practices at data center help to keep operating costs in check, and the company is able to pass some of those savings on to our customers.”
Data centers around the world continue to use enormous amount of energy to cool their servers and provide power for their equipment.
According to estimates cited by the company, data centers consume as much as 4 percent of the world’s total energy every year, which is more than most countries use in a year.
SkGold Hosting says the new practices and procedures are a part of its goal to reduce its dependence on the fossil fuels that produce greenhouse gases.
Last month, the company began offering one year of free hosting to non-profit and charitable organizations throughout Canada and the US.
