Web Host SAVVIS Disconnects 40 Spammers

September 10, 2004 — (WEB HOST INDUSTRY REVIEW) — Web hosting provider SAVVIS (savvis.net) said on Thursday that it has dumped 40 customers who have been identified as spammers with the help of Spamhaus (spamhaus.org), a non-profit organization dedicated to the fight against unsolicited bulk email. SAVVIS took the action after being notified by Spamhaus that it was providing services to known spammers. Spamhaus was able to determine this with information from its database, Register of Known Spam Operations.

The ROKSO database collects information and evidence on known spam operations that have had their services terminated by a minimum of three consecutive Internet service providers. According to Spamhaus, 90 percent of spam in North America and Europe can be traced to a group of approximately 200 known spam operations, nearly all of which are listed in the ROKSO database.

SAVVIS said the spammers were all customers it took over after its acquisition of Web hosting and telecommunications carrier Cable & Wireless USA. The spammers were not identified.

“Savvis has always been, and will always be, anti-spam,” said Rob McCormick, chairman and CEO of Savvis. “Extending our antispam policies and procedures to our recently acquired assets is an important part of the Cable & Wireless America integration process. Our relationship with Spamhaus, builder of the world’s most respected spam blocklist, will allow us to continue leading the industry fight against spam.”

SAVVS said it plans to adopt the ROKSO database as a key metric for ensuring its infrastructure does not support spamming in any way. The company said it will continue to disconnect spam operations.
