Citrix XenDesktop is one of the solutions compatible with Rackspace's new platform
(WEB HOST INDUSTRY REVIEW) — Web hosting provider Rackspace Hosting (www.rackspace.com) announced on Monday that it has launched its Rackspace hosted virtual desktop platform. The company says the platform can be used with desktop virtualization solutions from Citrix and other channel partners.
This announcement comes almost two weeks after Rackspace announced $13.8 million net income on $230 million revenue for the quarter ended March 31.
Citrix claims its XenDesktop solution is the first to support every desktop virtualization model in one integrated solution.
According to the press release, Rackspace’s platform enables customer to choose between a dedicated or cloud solution to host their virtual desktops.
As smaller enterprises begin to adopt virtual desktops, web hosts have an opportunity to offer a value added service that has yet to hit its peak demand, according to research by Gartner. Gartner expects mainstream adoption to take place between 2012 and 2014, with 70 million users by 2014.
“As enterprises realize the strategic value of the business agility, workforce flexibility and management efficiency offered by desktop virtualization, they are rapidly growing their implementations,” Matt Lull, senior director, global strategic alliances for Citrix Systems said in a statement. “Rackspace’s hosted virtual desktop platform gives enterprises instant access to the infrastructure they need, whether it’s a dedicated environment for virtual desktop infrastructure or for shared hosted desktops. We’re excited to build on our portfolio by offering this joint solution, which enables us to extend new innovations in virtual desktops to our customers.”
Rackspace says its virtual desktop uses RackConnect to deploy a solution that leverages private cloud and CloudServers for XenApp environments.
“We’re tapping our vast community of partners and their networks to provide customers with a hosted virtual desktop platform that offers them choices,” Odus Wittenburg, vice president of enterprise solutions for Rackspace stated. “Providing Fanatical Support on top of our solutions portfolio produces exceptional business outcomes for our customers and that is what we do best. By working with partners like Citrix and their network of nearly 9,000 partners, we can utilize their exceptional software and application solutions, which is what they do best.”
Rackspace VARS and channel partners can add the VDI to their portfolio of offerings.
