(WEB HOST INDUSTRY REVIEW) – Web host Rackspace (www.rackspace.com) announced on Wednesday that it has expanded its cloud infrastructure in the UK. The company says it already has over 500 UK customers in beta, and over 100,000 customers using its US-based cloud.
Rackspace recently integrated Akami’s Web acceleration and cloud optimization services.
“Due to storage regulations set out under European law, many UK companies are restricted from using cloud,” Lanham Napier, Rackspace president and CEO said in a statement. “Our UK offering allows companies to avoid offshore data issues and weighty upfront capital investments which helps them become more strategically agile from a business perspective.”
The company says its new UK cloud solutions include its Cloud Files service, which is ideal for storing backups, video files, or static user content. Cloud Files runs on OpenStack Object Storage. Its Cloud servers are located on the Xen hypervisor.
“It is as a result of direct feedback from our existing and prospective customer base in Europe that we have brought the Rackspace cloud to Europe and built it out in our UK data center,” Napier said. “The Rackspace European cloud brings with it reduced latency for those customers and helps eradicate concerns over currency fluctuations and European data legislation compliance.”
Rackspace has only offered its managed hosting services out of its London data center in the UK until now.
The company first announced its UK cloud expansion in May 2010.
Amazon Web Services has been offering its cloud service since 2008.
