(WEB HOST INDUSTRY REVIEW) — With Email and Apps division steadily growing this year, hosting provider Rackspace (www.rackspace.com) is keeping up this momentum with the unveiling of three new businesses-class products all based around collaboration and storage: Rackspace Cloud Drive, Rackspace Server Backup, and Hosted Microsoft SharePoint.
The new products extend Rackspace’s Software as a Service portfolio beyond its existing cloud-based email products such as Rackspace Email and Hosted MS Exchange. With its email platform already boasting more paid mailboxes than Google, according to Rackspace, prior to its Tuesday announcement, its email and app portfolio was competing very well with Google Apps and other email vendors. And with the launch of a much broader suite of cloud-based business apps, Rackspace is poised for further success and growth in the SaaS marketplace.
Rackspace Cloud Drive stores, shares, and backs up files for individuals and teams, enabling them to store and share files between employees and securely access data from within and outside the office without any additional hardware. They can also synchronize desktop folders with a cloud-based network drive and with other computers, backup data to Rackspace Cloud Files and easily restore data in the event of a hardware failure. It also features AES-256, key-based data encryption.
Rackspace Server Backup, is an easy-to-use software and cloud-based file storage system to replace or protect file server data. It lets customers backup server data to Rackspace Cloud Files, protect server data with AES-256 encryption, and manage data remotely using any Mac, Windows, or Linux PC.
Rackspace Cloud Drive and Rackspace Server Backup are both powered by technology from Jungle Disk, which Rackspace bought in October 2008.
Hosted Microsoft SharePoint is planned for general availability in late 2009. It will lets customers manage and share files online across multiple teams with easy folder management and collaboration tools. They can also improve organization by giving teammates and co-workers one central place to hold discussions, view calendars, check for updates, and track progress. Also, sites can be customized to fit the team’s needs with user-friendly templates and easily assignable user permissions.
