(WEB HOST INDUSTRY REVIEW) — UK Web hosting provider PEER 1 Hosting (www.peer1hosting.co.uk) announced on Friday it has launched the industry’s first large-scale, hosted graphics processing unit cloud in the UK.
Developed by NVIDIA subsidiary mental images, the service operates on the RealityServe 3D Web application service platform.
Combining NVIDIA Tesla GPUs and 3D web services software, RealityServer platform delivers interactive and photorealistic applications over the Web.
Using the iray renderer, the platform lets animators, product designers, architects and consumers to visualize 3D scenes realistically.
As a result, Peer 1 Hosting customers can use parallel NVIDIA Tesla GPUs to deliver high computational performance across demanding applications, including graphics rendering, complex quantitative processing, video compression, and large-model 3D Web services for access by mobile clients.
Hosting the GPUs and software within the cloud simplifies customer implementation and provides new users with a cost-effective entry way, while reducing any internal IT pressures.
“With their commitment to best-in-breed technology and state-of-the-art data centers, PEER 1 Hosting has all the skills to deliver a service of this kind and make the power of the GPU more accessible than ever before,” says Sumit Gupta, product line manager of Tesla products at NVIDIA. “RealityServer running on PEER 1 Hosting’s GPU Cloud will enable software developers of other Web 2.0 websites to offer 3D web applications, making the consumer experience on the Internet even more interactive.”
NVIDIA’s Tesla S1070 and Tesla M2050 hosted GPUs, as well as RealityServer, can now be purchased worldwide.
They are being hosted as a managed hosting offering at Peer 1 Hosting’s data centers in Toronto, Canada and London, UK.
The customized pricing structure starts at $1,700 but is ultimately based on the requirements of the end user.
The offering is unique in that it marks the first time a provider has offered a cloud solution focused on graphics processing.
It also validates Tier1 Research VP of research Antonio Piraino’s argument during the opening keynote at this week’s Tier1 Hosting & Cloud Transformation Summit.
Piraino discussed how in order for colocation provider to be successful they will have to focus on verticals, such as finance or healthcare, that are unlikely to move their applications in the cloud.
