(WEB HOST INDUSTRY REVIEW) — Web hosting provider PEER 1 Hosting (www.peer1.net) announced on Monday that it had begun building out a 50,000 square foot green data center in Portsmouth, UK.

The facility is designed according to the company’s “POD” plan, which enables it to build out stages as demand increases. The first of four PODs is scheduled for completion in the fall of 2011, with an initial cost of almost $16 million.

The remaining three stages, says PEER 1, will be built out according to demand and market conditions in the coming years.

Peer 1 says the facility will offer managed hosting, dedicated hosting and colocation services, the first time the company has offered all three of its main services from a facility based in the UK. When PEER 1 completed its flagship Toronto facility in 2010 it said the data center was the first to offer all three of its services.

WHIR TV created a series of videos chronicling the construction of the Toronto facility, every segment of which is linked from this page.

The new Portsmouth facility, says PEER 1, will have capacity for roughly 1,020 normal cabinet equivalents for colocation, or 20,000 servers for managed and dedicated hosting. The usage of the space will depend on demand, it says.

“Demand for European data center space is expected to double by 2015. There is a need for an increase in technology to meet this demand, and with our new flagship, we’re meeting this demand,” said Dominic Monkhouse, managing director for EMEA at PEER, quoted in the company’s press release. “We’re one of the few hosting companies in the UK who own our data centre. This is a testament to our growth in the UK market since our launch in 2009. We believe the new state-of-the-art facility in Portsmouth will have a very positive impact on future growth and returns.”

The new facility will be a part of the company’s “SuperNetwork,” which includes 18 data center facilities and 21 points of presence across North America and Europe.

The company says the Portsmouth data center will be built using energy efficient technologies, with the intent of reducing its overall carbon footprint and limit energy consumptions. Those technologies include high efficiency VFD centrifugal chillers and heat exchangers, enabling the facility to generate 85 percent free air cooling.
