Media Temple has launched Otto, a service that it says simplifies the domain transfer and website migration process
Web hosting provider Media Temple launched its new migration service, called Otto, to help users transfer websites, domains, and applications.
As its name suggests, Otto focuses on automating the migration process for customers, though the migration service is managed by Media Temple’s dedicated support team.
Media Temple says Otto simplifies the migration from the customer’s current host to its hosting services through two components. Its SiteMover service moves websites to, or from, Media Temple, while DomainMover transfers .com, .net, .org, and other common domains.
The process of transfering domains and migrating websites and applications is often a barrier for users looking to switch web hosts. Often, the process involves a lot of manual work on the part of the end-user. Recent examples such as the Windows Live Small Business to Office 365 migration have shown what a headache migration can be when users don’t receive adequate resources, support or automated tools.
Recently, in an effort to win customers, web host BlueHost posted a step-by-step video to help customers from MobileMe migrate to a BlueHost account.
“People are always asking (mt) Media Temple to help them move from their existing hosting provider to one they can brag about to their customers,” Russell P. Reeder, president and COO at (mt) Media Temple said in a statement. “We built Otto to remove the headaches that come with moving websites, apps, and domains so that customers can focus on the more important—and fun—aspects of creating their websites.”
To provide better site performance and security, Sitemover audits any widget or plug-in on the site being moved, and wherever possible, updates it to the most recent version.
With Otto, a website transfer can be executed for $150 per site and $25 per domain.
Reeder was named president and COO Media Temple at the beginning of June.
Talk back: What kinds of tools do you offer customers to help simplify migration? Would you consider developing something like Otto? Let us know in a comment.

Hi Nicole,
I think there’s a bit of inaccuracy in this article which may greatly mislead the readers.
Specifically on the SiteMover site (http://mediatemple.net/sitemover/) it clearly says:
_______________________________
What is SiteMover?
SiteMover is a migration service managed by our dedicated support team for your website. Rather than some mysterious automated process, our in-house experts will care for your website as if it was their own.

While you mentioned that “Its SiteMover service automatically moves websites”
Hi Dennis,
Thanks for pointing that out. I have removed “automatically” as to not mislead anyone. However, in the second paragraph I do state that the dedicated support team takes care of the process.
