(WEB HOST INDUSTRY REVIEW) — Australian hosting provider Macquarie Telecom (www.macquarietelecom.com) announced on Monday it has purchased 215,000 square feet of land and an existing building in North Ryde for $10.8 million, to accommodate its new data center.

The move comes a year after the company upgraded its data center network in an effort to increase its scalability and ability to manage the faster network speeds of Australia’s new national broadcasting network.

The floor space ratio of the site allows for the potential to build plant and raised floor of 215,000 square feet, securing Macquarie Telecom’s future hosting capacity needs.

The company decided to choose the North Ryde site for its diverse telecommunications supply and power infrastructure, which is essential to developing a multi redundant data center.

The site is also located close to Macquarie Telecom’s current and future customer base and compliments its existing Sydney CBD data center.

“Our Sydney CBD data center remains the most highly accredited data center in Australia and this same focus on operational excellence will be applied to our new North Ryde data center,” says Aidan Tudehope, managing director of hosting at Macquarie. “This new facility will support both our Corporate and Government customers’ future needs. It will be accredited to ASIO T4, Defence Signals Directorate standards, Payment Card Industry standard and ISO27001.”

In addition to the $10.8 million land and building purchase, the company will invest another $49 million in the project  for mechanical, electrical, plant and equipment needs.

$30 million of this investment will be made over the next 12 months, replacing prior guidance of $15 million given for fiscal 2011.

Titled Intellicentre 2, the new data center is set to be completed in late 2011.
