Web Host Green House Data Doubled Renewable Power Credit Purchases in 2011

(WEB HOST INDUSTRY REVIEW) — Cloud hosting provider and data center operator Green House Data reported on the weekend that it had increased the number of renewable energy credits purchased during 2011 boy more than 100 percent compared to what it bought in 2010.

The company says it purchased 1.8 million kWh of green power in 2011, with the increase driven by the success and growth of its cloud hosting and colocation services.

In September, the company announced an expansion to its data center in Wyoming, to meet the increasing demand.

Green House Data says that earlier in the year, it was named to the US Environmental Protection Agency’s Green Power Leadership Club, which recognizes organizations that have “significantly exceeded” the EPA Green Power Partnership’s  minimum requirements for buying green power.

Green House says it purchases the RECs through Renewable Choice, which it describes as “a renewable energy and carbon measurement, management and offset firm.” The company says the relative lack of available green power through the US energy infrastructure (less than 3 percent of US power is non-hydropower renewable energy) makes it difficult to purchase, and there are many hurdles to creating renewable energy on-site for private use (via windmill or solar panels, for instance). It considers purchasing renewable energy credits a worthwhile alternative.

“As a data center, it’s important to acknowledge the effects of our energy use on our environment. As we continue to grow, our commitment to using 100 percent wind power will contribute even more to reducing green house gas emissions,” says Shawn Mills, president of Green House Data, quoted in the company’s press release. “Our goal is to be one of only a few companies in the category of information technology to make the EPA’s National Top 50 list.”

Back in October, Green House Data launched a channel partner program, simplifying the process of selling the company’s capacity for reseller partners.
