UK-based web hosting provider Fasthosts (www.fasthosts.co.uk) announced on Monday that it had begun naming the winners of its competition, run in conjunction with The Great Exhibition 2012, to reward the best British business projects.

The Great Exhibition is an event intended to showcase everything “great” about Britain. Fasthosts says its competition will help to give “unique and brilliant” UK businesses a leg up in succeeding via the Internet, providing them with web hosting and search engine optimization, along with a laptop and software.

Until the start of The Great Exhibition 2012 festival, next August, Fasthosts will provide a prize including a Dell laptop, three years of its Business Premium hosting package (which includes site building and promoting software) a domain name and Microsoft Exchange hosting, to one winner each month.

Companies can nominate themselves and their projects for the award via an entry form on the Fasthosts website.

Fasthosts says it began the year of awarding prizes with a radio contest run on the Isle of Wight, awarding the prize package to a list of winners that includes, Rob Clifton of Clothes Comparison, Stuart Shore of Wight Wildlife Photography, Joe Cody of The Enterprise Post, and Isobel Whittle of JOYRIDE

“We have been hugely impressed with the many submissions we have received,” says Steve Holford, director at Fasthosts, quoted in the press release. “We know how hard it is for a new business to get up and running, and secure an internet presence; we really wanted to become involved so that we can take away some of the pain associated with launching a new venture. Many companies have a really good business idea but lack the funding to get started – our competition goes a long way towards removing some of these barriers. We would like to congratulate the first of our winners and look forward to announcing further winners in due course.”

Running contests is not an unusual promotional strategy for hosting providers, and they are all the more effective when tied to a cause, even one as simple and straightforward as promoting positivity among UK businesses.
