(WEB HOST INDUSTRY REVIEW) — In the buildup to Earth Days in April, hosting provider Codero (www.codero.com) announced that it has introduced a few new measures intended to increase the company’s overall “green” efforts as a business.

First among those initiatives, the company is encouraging employees, their families and customers in the Kansas City area – the location of Codero’s headquarters – to participate in the EarthWalk on April 16, 2011, a three-mile walk to raise funds for Bridging the Gap, an organization that brings together government agencies with citizens and business leaders on environmental issues.

Codero says it also recently launched a few other initiatives intended to reduce its environmental footprint, including the donating of office furniture to the Salvation Army in Phoenix, where the company’s data center is located – and starting a cardboard recycling program in conjunction with tenants at that data center.

The company has also been putting more energy-conscious power supplies in place for all its servers. And while energy efficiency is a fairly typical objective at hosting companies, Codero has also taken the fairly uncommon step of purchasing 100 percent of its power from certified renewable energy sources to power servers in both its data centers and headquarters.

Codero has been participating in the Plant-a-Tree program since Arbor Day in 2010. The company’s customers can participate in a campaign to help reforestation by including donations along with their online orders.

In addition, Codero recently initiated two endeavors to further reduce its environmental footprint. Donations of furniture and office furnishings are being made to the Salvation Army in Phoenix, Arizona where the hosting company’s data center is located. In addition, Codero is working with tenants in its Phoenix office area to bring in recycling container bins to start a cardboard recycling program.

News of Cordero’s efforts come along with a few similar announcements leading up to Earth Days. Earlier this week, Colocation America announced it would donate $100 to environmental organization Tree People for every new customer signup during the week of April 18 to 22.
