Weather.com Deploys NetScaler 9000

November 12, 2004 — (WEB HOST INDUSTRY REVIEW) — Application delivery system provider Netscaler (netscaler.com) announced this week that The Weather Channel has deployed the NetScaler 9000 Series application delivery system in order to enhance the performance of its Web site weather.com (weather.com). The Weather Channel said that with the deployment of NetScaler, it saved 40 percent on bandwidth and flawlessly delivered weather information during the recent run of hurricanes that hit the southeastern United States.

“The rare string of hurricanes hitting the United States drove our Web traffic to all time highs – nearly 890 million page views in September, which is more than double the number of page views in an average month,” says Dan Agronow, vice president of technology for weather.com. “Hurricane Ivan, a dangerous category three hurricane, shattered our daily traffic records to more than 70 million page views per day – peaking at more than 5 million per hour. NetScaler’s next-generation technology helped us deliver vital information to more than seven million unique visitors when they needed it most.”

NetScaler says Weather.com had been searching for a vendor to help it add new capabilities such as HTML compression, attack defense, SSL acceleration and Layer 7 switching to better manage the site’s existing network capacity in light of growing traffic demands. Agronow said NetScaler’s customer support was a key factor in its decision.

“Real-time businesses, such as weather.com, are examples of the most demanding business environments in the world as the response times of their customer-facing applications are both public and highly visible,” says Sheen Khoury, senior vice president of worldwide sales for NetScaler. “NetScaler’s products can significantly lower costs while increasing the performance, availability and security of the application networking infrastructure for weather.com and other top Internet sites.”
