November 26, 2001 — (WEB HOST INDUSTRY REVIEW) — Wavecom Inc., subsidiary of Wavecom SA (wavecom.com) and a
r
developer of digital wireless standard modules and modems, today announced
r
that Brightstar Corp. (brightstarcorp.com) will distribute its GSM/GPRS products in North and South America.
r
r
Wavecom develops a complete line of wireless standard modules (WISMO) and
r
modems for GSM (Global System for Mobile) and GPRS (general Packet Radio
r
Service) platforms. “With Brightstar’s network in Latin America, this
r
partnership certainly strengthens our distribution capabilities,” said Hany
r
Neoman, Wavecom’s U.S. chief operating officer. “Working with companies like
r
Brightstar and our other distributors will help us expand our business in
r
the personal communication devices, mobile computing, automotive and
r
telemetry/M2M sectors.”
r
r
More than 70 percent of the world’s wireless networks are GSM based,
r
including all of Europe and much of Asia. With more than 12 million
r
subscribers, GSM has been gaining ground in the fragmented U.S. market.
r
Integrated GSM/GPRS solutions, such as WISMO modules and modems, provide
r
North and South American manufacturers with a cost effective technology and
r
access to wireless applications in their respective regions and in the
r
worldwide markets.
r
r
Wavecom also recently announced a strategic decision to expand its
r
development horizons and offer products based on CDMA (Code Division
r
Multiple Access). Although GSM/GPRS is at present the world’s most widely
r
used wireless communications standard, CDMA accounts for nearly 40 per cent
r
of the market in North America and is making inroads into Asia, particularly
r
in China.
