August 13, 2001 -- (WEB HOST INDUSTRY REVIEW) -- WatchGuard Technologies, Inc. (watchguard.com), a leader in Internet security solutions, today announced WatchGuard for MSS 3.0, the latest release of its software used by over 75 managed security providers worldwide.
The integrated WatchGuard system allows MSPs to centrally manage
cost-effective, scalable security services that can be customized to match
the security needs of small, mid-sized and large customer networks. In
addition to increased VPN management scalability and performance, the
company says WatchGuard for MSS 3.0 now supports WatchGuard's new Firebox
III family of security appliances. WatchGuard for MSS 3.0 reduces the costs
associated with the deployment of managed security, and offers management
tools to provide real-time and historical insights into the composition of
network traffic.
"Since the introduction of WatchGuard for MSS in 1998 we have partnered with
many top tier managed security service providers, and this experience has
provided us with insight on how to refine the tools we are now offering in
version 3.0," said Mark Stevens, senior vice president of network security
for WatchGuard.
WatchGuard for MSS is a scalable, carrier-class system that gives service
providers tools to build and operate cost-effective security and VPN
services to subscribing businesses. Designed especially for service provider
requirements, WatchGuard incorporates a three-tier architecture and open
API's that allow rapid integration into an MSP's management system. The
platform of software, hardware and services includes a suite of management
software that resides at an MSP's Network Operations Center, Firebox
security appliances that are placed at the customer's premise and
WatchGuard's innovative LiveSecurity Service.
Features of WatchGuard for MSS include:
Centralized, scalable management from the NOC and comprehensive,
real-time views of all customer sites under management
Extensive logging for an unlimited number of Fireboxes under
management, continuous monitoring for specially defined trigger events, and
automatic distribution of configuration updates based on instruction from
the MSP
Customization of security features, such as Network Address
Translation ), URL filtering, and user authentication may be tailored to fit
the organization's security policy needs
WatchGuard says its value-added LiveSecurity Service keeps network defenses
current by systematically distributing security software enhancements and
rapid responses to the latest threats to MSP's for rapid distribution to
customers.
"We've been providing managed security services using the WatchGuard for MSS
platform as a component of our service offerings since 1999 and we are
impressed with the enhancements that WatchGuard continues to build into
their service provider offering," said Kevin Seiler, vice president of
AlphaNet Solutions. "We're already seeing support for the newly launched
Firebox III products in the MSS software. WatchGuard's responsiveness and
dedication to the service provider market continue to make them a valued
partner."
WatchGuard for MSS 3.0 is now shipping and available directly from the
company's website.

October 2009 - Web Hosting's All Star Team
This has been, for us, one of the most interesting, exciting and challenging build-ups to an issue of the magazine yet, Web Hosting's All Star Team. The balloting process was our first experiment with a kind of user participation we're planning to do a lot more with in the months to come. We had thousands of ballots submitted, with hundreds of write-in suggestions and a demonstration of user engagement that has us feeling super positive about the project.

July 2009 - What am I Worth?
One of the interesting luxuries of working on a project like the printed WHIR magazine is that it allows us to play with things like our point of view from one issue to the next. In recent months we've been giving added attention to the kind of practical and applicable advice aimed at smaller hosts and resellers. This issue carries on with that point of view, asking, in our cover story, "what am I worth?" It's a complicated question without a clear-cut answer.

May 2009 - The Blueprint for a Small Web Host
I was a little surprised by how difficult it became to see this idea through. We set out to assemble a blueprint for a small hosting business, but butted up pretty quickly against the general impossibility of covering all the territory that was out there to be covered. The basic constraints of a printed magazine, and the less-than-infinite amount of time we had available forced us to face the fact that we could never produce an exhaustive guide to starting a hosting company.
