December 6, 2004 — (WEB HOST INDUSTRY REVIEW) — Wachovia (wachovia.com), the fourth largest bank in the United States, is planning to open a new $400 million data center facility in Birmingham, Alabama, according to a report by the Associated Press.

The 210,000 square foot facility will initially employ 40 workers, with that number projected to double in the coming years, the report said.

Wachovia officials reportedly expect the total economic impact of the data center will be more than $6 billion.

Earlier this year, Wachovia purchased Birmingham-based SouthTrust Corporation for $14.3 billion.
