Vyatta Announces New Line of Network Appliances

(WEB HOST INDUSTRY REVIEW) — Open networking and network virtualization technology developer Vyatta (www.vyatta.com) has announced the Vyatta 3500 series of appliances, offering 20 Gbps bidirectional performance and the routing, firewall and VPN functionality required for large data centers and Internet service provider borders.

According to Vyatta’s recent announcement, Vyatta 3500 appliances combine Vyatta’s open networking software with Intel’s latest Nehalem architecture to deliver 10 Gbps networking capability at a twentieth of the price of proprietary alternatives.

Intel recently used Vyatta software to benchmark the power of its Nehalem architecture for networking. Its test results showed that one quad-core Intel Xeon 5500 series processor can forward traffic at 20 Gbps and still have remaining CPU capacity.

Vyatta’s open source approach to networking and virtualization software has attracted the attention of The 451 Group’s Daniel Kusnetzky, who notes that the software has come one step closer to making a major dent in the price and performance landscape of the industry.

“This time, Vyatta has taken its software technology and deployed it as a family of networking appliances making the technology more attractive to those who would rather purchase a package rather than loading software onto one of their own industry standard systems,” Kusnetzky wrote in a ZDnet blog. “Since Cisco has started offering its own computers, in partnership with EMC, VMware and Intel, other hardware suppliers would be well advised to consider a partnership with Vyatta as part of a competitive strategy.”
