(WEB HOST INDUSTRY REVIEW) — Virtualization and cloud infrastructure solution provider VMware (www.vmware.com) outlined its vision for the next decade of service-based information technology at VMworld 2010.
According to VMware’s announcement this week, highly virtualized infrastructure, modern development approaches and anywhere, anytime access by end users will play a large role in enabling a more efficient and business-focused IT model.
“Two years ago VMware set out a vision to modernize the data center and transform IT,” VMware president and chief executive officer Paul Maritz stated. “This week we are taking significant steps forward to bring this new world of IT as a Service and hybrid cloud computing to reality.”
As “IT as a Service” shifts to a more business-centric approach, he notes, production and consumption of IT services will better align with business requirements, producing outcomes such as operational efficiency, competitiveness and rapid response.
This new infrastructure model, which will involve the replacement of traditional data centers with logical pools of resources provided by internal, external or public cloud providers, will enable IT to produce services in a self-service model, with consistent policies and business contracts aligning resources to business needs.
In an effort to drive this IT-as-a-Service strategy, VMware has introduced six new products as part of its cloud infrastructure strategy.
Launched Tuesday, VMware vCloud Director extends the resource pooling capabilities of VMware vSphere, changing the way IT delivers infrastructure services and the way users access and consume them. It essentially lets IT to create “virtual data centers” of compute, network and storage resources with defined management policies, SLAs and pricing, available to users through fully automated self-service access.
On the security front, VMware has introduced three new products designed specifically for virtual and cloud environments: VMware vShield Edge, VMware vShield App, and VMware vShield Endpoint. By virtualizing security and edge services, including firewall, VPN and load balancing, VMware’s approach frees them from the constraints of physical infrastructure and provides a single, adaptive and programmable security infrastructure, capable of securing cloud environments, where applications and services are mobile and leverage shared infrastructure.
VMware also announced two new services drawing on VMware’s industry expertise. VMware vCloud Datacenter Services provides enterprises a safe and compliant to extend their data centers to external clouds using globally consistent infrastructure, management and security models. And VMware vCloud Consulting Services provide a complete portfolio of professional service offerings including assessment, planning, design, and deployment services for IT infrastructure transformation.
“Enterprises are embracing a new model of infrastructure to deliver IT as a Service through hybrid cloud computing,” VMware virtualization and cloud platforms senior vice president and general manager Raghu Raghuram said in a statement. “The products and services we are launching today provide a comprehensive enterprise architecture that will deliver the agility and economics of the cloud with the security and quality of service our enterprise customers need.
