(WEB HOST INDUSTRY REVIEW) — Virtualization and cloud infrastructure provider VMware (www.vmware.com) announced on Monday that it has released the new version of its email and collaboration platform, VMware Zimbra 7.
According to the press release, the latest version has new data sharing capabilities, improved calendaring and search functionality and upgraded management features.
“VMware Zimbra continues to be the fastest-growing enterprise collaboration solution, now with more than 66 million paid mailboxes and more than 200,000 organizations using VMware Zimbra as their next-generation collaboration platform of choice,” Jim Morrisroe, vice president of Zimbra Products at VMware said in a statement.
The newest version of Zimba has enhanced management features enabling administrators to set parameters around who can email certain distribution lists, a feature VMware claims will greatly reduce spam.
“The enterprise inbox is going through dramatic changes,” Erin K. Traudt, research director, enterprise collaboration and social solutions program at IDC said. “The impact of social media along with a new-generation of increasingly mobile workers creates new demands on collaboration platforms. The concept of ‘sharing more and sending less’ becomes a key capability that enterprises’ should consider as they look to arm their workforce with the essentials of everyday business communications.”
Zimba 7 has increased mobile support by providing access to the BlackBerry Enterprise Server 5.0, enabling users to sync applications.
The platform has established a Briefcase functionality which allows users to share files. With the People Search function users can access shared contact lists and organization charts.
VMware Zimbra Collaboration Server 7 and the beta versions of VMware Zimbra Desktop 7 and VMware Zimbra Appliance 7 are available for download on its website.
