(WEB HOST INDUSTRY REVIEW) — Virtualization software and cloud infrastructure provider VMware (www.vmware.com) has announced the first of a series of technology collaborations with Google (www.google.com) to enable enterprise software developers to more efficiently build, deploy and manage applications within any cloud environment – and on any device.

Announced Thursday at the SpringOne 2GX developer conference, the collaborative projects to become available in the next two weeks include Spring Roo and Google Web Toolkit; Spring Insight and Google Speed Tracer; and SpringSource Tool Suite and Google Plugin for Eclipse. The rollout of these projects represents the first step in a series of technology collaborations to enhance cloud portability across multiple clouds and devices.

“Together, Google and VMware enable enterprises to develop and deploy rich Spring Java applications across multiple clouds and devices.” VMware application platform division senior vice president Rod Johnson said in a statement. “Today we have reached an important milestone where these modern applications can run smoothly within the firewalls of a company’s production data center or in a trusted provider’s cloud environment.”

At SpringOne 2GX in Chicago, VMware demonstrated the ability to deploy a SQL-based Spring application on Google App Engine for Business.

According to VMware, the next collaboration projects will focus on even broader mobile application support, and accessing data in the cloud.

“Developers are looking for faster ways to build and run great web applications, and businesses want platforms that are open and flexible,” Google developer platforms vice president Vic Gundotra said in a statement. “By making deployments of Spring Java applications on Google App Engine using Google Web Toolkit generally available, developers can deploy Java applications in production environments of their choice while leveraging rich web front-end across multiple devices.”

The collaborative projects will become generally available over the next two weeks.

Spring Roo and Google Web Toolkit combines a rapid application development tool and the power of GWT, enabling developers to use an enterprise production environment to build rich apps that leverage technologies such as AJAX and HTML5.

Spring Insight and Google Speed Tracer offers end-to-end, holistic view of Web application performance to help optimizing and improve the end-user experience.

Finally, the SpringSource Tool Suite and Google Plugin for Eclipse provides new tools – previously only available for building desktop and server solutions – into the hands of those building Web apps, making it easier for developers to build and maintain large scale, Web-based enterprise applications.

Projects will become generally available for download via a special Google Code website, and individuals can sign up to be alerted when the releases are made generally available.
