(WEB HOST INDUSTRY REVIEW) — Cloud infrastructure management software VMOps made several announcements on Tuesday, starting with the rebranding of its name to the more straight-forward Cloud.com (www.cloud.com), the closing of an $11 million Series B round led by new investor Index Ventures, the expansion of its management staff, and the launch of its open source software solution CloudStack.
The closing of Cloud.com’s latest funding round was led by new investor Index Ventures, with previous investors Redpoint Ventures and Nexus Venture Partners alsoparticipating. The investment brings the company’s total funding to date to $17.6 million.
The company also recently extended its management team with the addition of three new hires, including Peder Ulander as chief marketing officer, Kevin Kluge as vice president of engineering, and Kyle MacDonald as chief evangelist.
Finally, Cloud.com introduced CloudStack, a comprehensive open source software solution that accelerates the deployment, management and configuration of multi-tier and multi-tenant private and public cloud services for enterprises and service providers.
The platform seamlessly integrates with existing data center infrastructure without modification, special-purpose hardware or reconfiguration.
Built using common cloud frameworks like the Amazon Web Services API, Citrix Cloud Center and VMware’s vCloud initiative, Cloud.com provides an open environment that interoperates with a user’s existing cloud initiatives.
“From a hosting provider and service provider’s perspective, it’s not really true that there are a number of good options out there,” Shannon Williams, vice president of business development at Cloud.com, said in a phone interview. “We’ve worked with a lot of service providers out there, and most of them find that while there are offerings that have been around from 5 to 10 years around grid computing and there are offerings that are focused on the enterprise. There really aren’t a lot of tools that are designed for service providers that need to manage big, disparate users that have to be completely isolated, they need to be a very detailed metrics usage so they can bill people, and a real cloud experience, real virtual networks, real virtual storage.”
The integrated software solution for delivering infrastructure as a service is offered in three distinct products, including CloudStack Enterprise Edition, CloudStack Service Provider Edition and CloudStack Community Edition.
Many enterprises and service providers are already using CloudStack, says the company, where they are able to seamlessly integrate the platform with their existing data center infrastructure.
