(WEB HOST INDUSTRY REVIEW) — Open source collaboration software developer Open-Xchange (www.open-xchange.com) announced on Wednesday that Germany’s third-largest telecommunications provider, Versatel (www.versatel.de) will use the Open-Xchange platform to deliver free webmail to its customers.
According to the announcement, Versatel will supply more than 1.3 million email accounts, with the SaaS groupware and email solution, replacing its existing webmail front-end with Open-Xchange.
Versatel Mail Basic DSL customers, says the release, will each receive two email accounts for free, each with one GB of storage. Versatel hosting customers will each receive up to 500 email boxes, depending on their package.
“With software-as-a-service, small- and medium-sized companies in particular can realize immediate benefits,” says Rafael Laguna, CEO of Open-Xchange, quoted in the announcement. “They don’t have to worry about installing hardware, software or backup. We provide them with complete email and groupware functionality – at surprisingly low cost.”
After initially replacing the webmail front-end, Versatel will provide customers with additional groupware features for a fee. Those features include business class email, calendaring, contacts and task management with information management and document sharing features.
Open-Xchange began promoting the free webmail and paid-for business applications model in February of this year. And the company says the new structure has been driving new deals for the company.
Prior to signing Versatel, Open-Xchange announced earlier this month that it had signed a similar deal with NameCheap.
