November 6, 2001 — (WEB HOST INDUSTRY REVIEW) — Versant Corporation (versant.com), a provider of middleware infrastructure solutions, has announced the availability of Versant enJin 2.2. This latest release offers performance and scalability enhancements, new ease-of-use features and extends the ability to seamlessly persist Java objects from within Java Server Pages and Servlets as well as EJBs. It also provides tool integration with Borland’s JBuilder Integrated Development Environment to simplify new application development.
r

r

Versant enJin 2.2 complements the J2EE platform delivering high performance
r

and scalability, reduced application development time and increased
r

reliability for data needed within the middle-tier, application server
r

environment. Versant says it integrates with leading application server
r

vendors, IBM WebSphere and BEA WebLogic to boost performance by as much as
r

50 times over existing solutions.
r

r

“The performance wars among leading application server vendors
r

notwithstanding, Versant enJin has already demonstrated performance
r

increases of up to 50 times for our customers deploying high end e-business
r

applications,” said Christine Caldwell, VP marketing, Versant. Customers
r

today can enjoy tremendous performance increases while also reducing new
r

application development time by 40%. This can translate to savings of $5
r

million, on development alone, for customers deploying large-scale
r

projects.”
r

r

IDC’s Carl Olofson also believes that reliability of the e-business data,
r

what IDC calls “intermediate data” is important to IT managers. “As
r

customers continue to deploy e-business applications on application servers,
r

ensuring the reliability of intermediate data becomes increasingly
r

important,” said Carl Olofson, Sr. Research director, IDC. “Intermediate
r

data is a new type of data used within the middle tier and can be session
r

data such as shopping cart data or meta-data such as a user profile or
r

workflow data to manage a credit approval process. A product such as enJin
r

is designed to reliably store this data, while still providing automatic
r

updates of completed transactions to the back-end relational database.”
r

r

New features in enJin 2.2 include seamless support for JSPs and Servlets
r

enabling the transparent persistence of Java-based objects within the
r

middle-tier for fast access and processing. Additionally, enJin 2.2 offers
r

tool integration with Borland’s JBuilder to enable the design, development,
r

compile, and test of new enJin applications within the IDE.
r

r

Subsequent versions of enJin will include tool integration for IBM’s
r

WebSphere Workbench, WebGain’s VisualCafe and others. enJin 2.2 is available
r

today for IBM WebSphere and BEA WebLogic on both Microsoft Windows and Sun
r

Solaris platforms.
