A Google map of Western New York, the potential future site of Verizon's data center campus
(WEB HOST INDUSTRY REVIEW) — Telecommunications provider Verizon (www.verizon.com) announced on Wednesday it will construct a massive data center campus that will likely be located in Somerset, New York on the shores of Lake Ontario, according to a report by Data Center Knowledge.
The company revealed details about the $500 million, 900,000 square feet facility, which will house $3.4 billion in equipment over its 20-year lifespan.
Verizon also said that along with its investments in land, utilities and other costs, the data center campus will cost a total of $4.5 billion.
The company has yet to confirm Somerset as the site’s location, divulging that it has shopped around for properties in other states.
Verizon met with Somerset zoning officials this week where company executives revealed more details about the project.
It also applied for tax incentives from the Niagara County Industrial Development Agency, which could save the company $330 million over the span of the 20-year agreement.
It also plans to attain grants from the Empire State Development Corporation.
The company plans on constructing three two-story data centers on the 17-acre, AES-owned property, with each facility encompassing about 300,000 square feet of space.
The data center project could potentially generate 175 jobs.
Situated on the shores of Lake Ontario, the data center project is expected to use free cooling nearly all year round, as well as leverage hydro-electric power from the Niagara River.
The site is just 20 miles away from Lockport, home to Yahoo’s newest data center which features a chicken coop design.
Verizon is also currently building a 30,000 square foot data center in the Lubbock Business Park in Lubbock, Texas.
