VeriSign Issues 4 Millionth SSL Certificate

(WEB HOST INDUSTRY REVIEW) — Internet infrastructure services provider VeriSign (www.verisign.com) has issued its four millionth Secure Sockets Layer certificate since becoming a Certificate Authority in 1995.

According to VeriSign’s Monday announcement, the total includes certificates issued by VeriSign under all four of its SSL brands, VeriSign, GeoTrust, thawte, and RapidSSL. VeriSign offers a range of digital certificates for protecting online businesses and their customers by encrypting sensitive information during online transactions, authenticating the identity of certificate owners, and warning users when certificates are invalid.

“As the world’s leading SSL Certificate Authority, VeriSign understands that when customer trust is paramount, second best is never nearly good enough,” VeriSign product marketing vice president Tim Callan said in a statement. “Now more than ever, in a marketplace that is truly global and increasingly competitive, protecting a Web site, application or service with VeriSign is an investment that pays dividends every day.”

While Netcraft’s (www.netcraft.com) May 2009 Trends Report showed that web host and newcomer to the SSL market Go Daddy (www.godaddy.com) accounted for 44 percent of the overall net growth in SSL certificates, this figure is weighted by domain-only validated SSL certificate sales. VeriSign continues to lead in business validated SSL certificates, and extended validation SSL certificates, which are typically more work-intensive, expensive and secure.

Among its four million certificates, VeriSign has issued more than 12,000 Extended Validation SSL certificates, making VeriSign the clear market leader with 74 percent of the EV SSL market.

VeriSign has also issued and managed tens of millions of Public Key Infrastructure certificates for thousands of enterprises, government agencies and other customers throughout the world. PKI deployments use digital certificates for authentication, encryption and digital signing, offering a flexible platform for the complete management of digital certificates for authentication, encryption and digital signing.

Due to its huge volume of certificates, VeriSign conducts up to a billion Online Certificate Status Protocol checks every day, helping web browsers determine whether an SSL or user certificate is still valid or has been revoked.
