VeriSign Debuts Anti-Phishing Service

June 29, 2004 — (WEB HOST INDUSTRY REVIEW) — Internet infrastrcuture services provider VeriSign (verisign.com) announced on Monday that it has launched a security solution designed to defend against phishing attacks. VeriSign says its anti-phishing solution protects enterprises through a five-tiered system that helps prevent, detect and respond to attacks, mitigating and eliminating identity theft and email fraud attempts.

Phishing attacks involve the mass distribution of “spoofed” or forged email messages with return addresses, links, and branding which appear to come from legitimate financial institutions but are designed to lead recipients towards fraudulent Web sites that attempt to trick them into divulging personal data such as account usernames, passwords, credit card numbers and social security numbers. Recent reports by Netcraft find that phishing scams are on the rise.
