April 24, 2002 -- (WEB HOST INDUSTRY REVIEW) -- Registration for.US domain names will go live at 10:00 a.m. EDT today.

.US is the official country code top-level domain (ccTLD) for the United States within the global domain name system (DNS).

Any U.S. citizen or resident, as well as any business or organization, including federal, state, and local government with a bona fide presence in the United States will now be able to register a .US domain name.

Previously, the .US domain was reserved for governments and educational facilities.

The .US domain registry allowed companies to register domain names that had corresponding trademark applications or registrations during a so called "sunrise period".

These domains will be the first to go live. All other domains can be registered on a "first-come, first-served" basis.

The wholesale price of a .US domain name will be $32 for five years minimum registration.

.US domain registration will available from most domain name brokers.

The U.S. Department of Commerce delegated the .US top-level namespace to domain registry NeuStar, Inc (www.neustar.us) in 2001. NeuStar is responsible for the commercialization and maintenance of the namespace and its "whois" or domain name search system.
