UK2 Group Deploys CloudLinux Across All Its Web Hosting Brands

(WEB HOST INDUSTRY REVIEW) — After three months of testing, global Web hosting organization UK2 Group (www.uk2group.com) has deployed the CloudLinux (www.cloudlinux.com) operating system on all of its shared hosting servers.

UK2 Group is one of the largest hosting providers in Europe and US, with an extensive customer base across many brands including UK2.net, VPS.net, midPhase, WestHost, US2.net, WingSix, and Dotable. As a commercially supported Linux OS optimized for hosting companies and data centers, CloudLinux will help UK2 Group deliver better performance, stability and reliability to its hosting customers.

“UK2 Group is very pleased with the results of the deployment,” UK2 Group chief executive officer Ditlev Bredahl said in a statement. “CloudLinux allows us to improve stability and efficiency of our shared hosting platform. It virtually eliminates downtime for our servers caused by client’s overloading the server. It also gives us good visibility into which clients are using the majority of resources, allowing increased management capabilities and higher density. We’ve been particularly pleased with the improvements we’ve seen on our large OnApp based cloud infrastructure in VPS.NET.”

CloudLinux’s core technology is Lightweight Virtual Environment, a kernel-level technology that limits the amount of resources (CPU, concurrent processes) available to a group of processes. While similar to container type virtualization technology, LVE is completely transparent and lightweight. Once installed, the LVE works to manage resources that the hosting provider sets for the accounts on a server. It controls the CPU resources to ensure that each account on a shared server is allocated enough resources to run efficiently without jeopardizing the other tenants on that server, making the server more stable and delivering better performance.

VPS.net (www.vps.com), which the UK2 Group launched last year in an effort to simplify the process of VPS cloud hosting, began offering CloudLinux across its cloud computing architecture in March because of its added flexibility and control. Its Lightweight Virtual Environment technology enables VPS.net to provide more effective resource management by reducing the amount of resources any website can use, so that no single account can slow down a whole server.

“Cloud Linux understands the needs of hosting providers in delivering secure, reliable, high performance services to their clients,” Cloud Linux founder and CEO Igor Seletskiy said in a statement. “With our proven technology, shared hosting providers like UK2 Group can achieve a higher level of service and support for their customer base.”

With LVE, hosting providers like UK2 Group now have the tools to control the CPU demands of individual tenants, so that a single site cannot slow or take down a whole server and provide customers with the easy management and solutions they need to stay ahead in business. In a recent interview with the WHIR, Seletskiy goes into greater detail about the objectives and benefits of the CloudLinux operating system and its LVE technology.

Earlier this week, CloudLinux released SecureLVE, an extension of its LVE technology that creates a higher level of security for shared hosting servers. SecureLVE is a container based, application-level solution that provides a virtualized file system separating each user on the server into its own virtual environment to prevent one user from seeing any other users on the server. Altogether, this makes it difficult for hackers to attack, deface, or steal data from a shared Web server.
