(WEB HOST INDUSTRY REVIEW) — UK web hosting provider Memset (www.memset.com) announced on Monday that it has joined the OpenStack community (www.openstack.org).

Launched in July 2010, OpenStack is an open-source cloud platform designed by NASA and Rackspace to reinforce the emergence of technology standards and cloud interoperability.

In March, cloud storage provider Gluster announced that it has joined the OpenStack community and last week Internap released its OpenStack-based public cloud.

Memset says it was set on being part of OpenSource because it believes “that the future of infrastructure as a service should be an open, interoperable marketplace, where customers can move between suppliers with ease.”

The UK-based company admits that Europe is behind the US in terms of cloud computing, so this initiative “presents a major opportunity for UK cloud providers” and an opportunity for Memset to “be a part of the future cloud marketplace and help contribute to its development.”

“At present Amazon’s EC2 & S3 interface have become defacto standards, however, they are not truly open, collaborative projects,” Kate Craig-Wood, managing director, Memset said in a statement. “The industry needs to come together to build a set of systems and standards to fully realise the potential of cloud computing, and I believe OpenStack will fulfill that.”

Memset says it will integrate parts of the OpenStack technology into its systems, starting with a storage solution and will contribute to OpenStack through sharing best practices in virtualization and open source solutions.

A year ago, Memset had the most reliable hosting company site according to Netcraft’s monthly survey.
