(WEB HOST INDUSTRY REVIEW) — The UK public sector will soon embark on an extensive consolidation program which aims to consolidate hundreds of separate data centers into 10 to 12 facilities, according to an ICT strategy document published by the Office of the Government CIO.
In the document, John Suffolk said the data center strategy would change significantly over the next three to five years.
The document calls for the “consolidation of existing public data centers into highly secure and resilient facilities, managed by expert suppliers.”
Additionally, the document continues by stating that the “strategy will start with central government departments before being rolled out ‘to the whole of the public sector.’”
So far, individual departments such as the Department of Work and Pensions have been successful with this rate of consolidation, bringing the number of data centers from 4 down to 2.
The consolidation strategy will bring a savings of £300 million a year in ICT infrastructure costs, while reducing the power and cooling requirements by up to 75 percent, says the document.
