October 9, 2002 — (WEB HOST INDUSTRY REVIEW) — According to a recent report by digital attack research group mi2g (mi2g.com), information from the Security Intelligence Products and Systems (SIPS) database indicates that digital attacks against the UK and Australia as well as the US continue to mount as the violence between Israel and Palestine continues.
Preliminary estimates of Economic Damage for the first week in October, says the report, place total damage caused worldwide hacker groups between $51 million and $63 million, based on information from the Economic Value Engine for Damage Analysis (EVEDA) component of SIPS.
The overt digital attacks have included several high profile breaches, including the online systems of the US State Department, the California Energy Commission and the World Health Organization?s South East Asia Regional Office.
mi2g says the Unix Security Guards (USG), a pro-Islamic hacker group was responsible for 1,417 of the attacks in October so far: 1,142 on USA, 124 on UK and 99 on Australia. USG was first formed in May 2002 and has carried out 1,772 attacks against Israel, the US and UK.
