November 1, 2001 — (WEB HOST INDUSTRY REVIEW) — NeuStar, Inc. (neustar.biz), a neutral third party provider of mission-critical services, has been selected by the Department of Commerce (DoC) to manage the authoritative Internet address space for the United States – “.US”. The selection was the culmination of a public discussion of the .US domain that began in 1998 and was made after a comprehensive competitive evaluation process. NeuStar was awarded a four-year contract with two optional one-year renewals.
r

r

For the first time, all U.S. residents, government entities, public service
r

organizations and businesses will be able to establish an American identity
r

on the Internet. Short memorable Internet addresses (i.e. “johnsmith.us”,
r

“publicservice.us”, “mycompany.us”, etc.) were not possible under the
r

previous .US policy.
r

r

This policy change, along with technical innovation, significant operational
r

improvements, and promotion of .US, will make possible consumer, “e-Gov”,
r

business and public service applications that lead to widespread use and
r

acceptance of the .US space. NeuStar will, however, preserve and support the
r

existing names and structure within .US.
r

r

Jeffrey E. Ganek, CEO of NeuStar, Inc. said, “.US will play a key role in
r

America’s 21st century communication infrastructure. A great opportunity
r

exists to unlock the potential of the .US domain to the benefit of the
r

American people. There is an increasing need for security and advanced
r

capabilities on the Internet. NeuStar will operate this national resource
r

with the highest level of reliability, stability and integrity.”
r

r

Ganek added: “NeuStar has a legacy of facilitating policy processes with
r

multiple stakeholders and will ensure an immediate seamless transition for
r

the current .US user community. We look forward to working with existing
r

users, U.S. residents, government, businesses and public interest
r

organizations to enhance the functionality of the .US space.” About NeuStar,
r

Inc. NeuStar, Inc. is a neutral third party provider of mission-critical
