(WEB HOST INDUSTRY REVIEW) — Web hosting provider Turnkey Internet (www.turnkeyinternet.com) announced on Wednesday that it will provide hosting services for IT consultant Austin Heap (www.austinheap.com), who built a proxy network for bypassing government filters to help reroute Iranians on the web.
The Iranian government recently came under fire for blocking citizens from accessing social networking sites like Twitter and Facebook as well as mobile phone service and other communications tools to curb protesting the recent results of the election.
Thousands of demonstrators have flooded the streets, protesting the election results since Saturday, while many have organized and distributed news on sites such as Twitter, Facebook and YouTube.
San Francisco-based Heap has been helping Iranian citizens to protest the presidential election results through his proxy network, allowing them to organize protests, report on brutality to an international audience and draw support for their efforts worldwide.
The country is known to have the highest number of bloggers per capita in the world.
Heap is currently developing a software program for Windows, Mac and Unix systems called Haystack which will “specifically target the Iranian government’s web filtering mechanisms.”
To implement the program, Heap was seeking high-capacity Internet servers. He eventually turned to Turnkey Internet for help.
“Turnkey Internet is pleased to play a role in Austin Heap’s work,” says Adam Wills, president of TurnKey Internet. “We take great pride in helping businesses and entrepreneurs leverage the technology of the Internet. Austin Heap’s work really highlights the power the Internet has to extend communication channels across the globe.”
Albany, New York-based Turnkey Internet provides enterprise-class managed web hosting solutions for small and medium-sized businesses.
